Dear Patients and Colleagues:

The past few months has been challenging for all of us.  The Global Pandemic has changed the way we were used to living.  As we start to prepare to return to work in some capacity, we would like to inform you of some of the changes our office is making in order to ensure the safety of our patients and our team.

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-1), influenza virus (H1N1) and, most notably, the Coronavirus/ COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) are conditions that bring airborne transmission of disease to our attention during these critical times. Research indicates that indoor particulate matter, compromised of bio-aerosols and virus particles, pollutes the human body. It was assumed that these particles are exhaled with exhaled air, but evidence confirms these particles lodge deep within our lungs and get absorbed into the circulatory system leading to systemic effects.

At Johnstone Periodontics, Cleaner Air in the surgical office is our highest priority. Because of this, we have instituted a number of strategies to improve the air quality and reduce the chance of bio-aerosols circulating in our office.

  1. We have installed “Purevac“ high volume evacuation tips for all surgical and hygiene rooms. This enables a one-handed approach to evacuate the patient's oral cavity of aerosols, splatter, fluid, and debris, while also providing retraction, visibility, and illumination to the treatment area.  This system helps to eliminate over 90% of aerosols created during dental procedures.
  2. We have installed a custom plexiglass shield in our front desk reception area. Our acrylic hygiene sneeze guard allows us to operate safely, not only to protect our frontline administration team but also to protect and reassure our patients keeping adequate physical distance in our reception area.  No metal surfaces are used, meaning a shorter life span for any contaminating virus.
  3. We have implemented the use of pre-treatment peroxyl rinses for all of our patients. This 1.5% hydrogen peroxide rinse is shown to lower the potential viral load in the oral cavity, and thus facilitate the fight against oral transmission.
  4. We have gone completely paperless!! We have acquired advanced digital e-signing pads which will enable us to wipe down and disinfect them after every use.
  5. We have ordered eight additional Surgically Clean Air Purifiers in addition to our large surgically clean air unit we have had for the past 8 years. These medical grade air purification systems utilize a multi-stage air purifying technology, including proprietary HEPA-RX filters and UV lights to work together to clean, purify and re-energize the indoor air. The six stage filtration system works to remove particulate matter from the air – including potentially infective droplet nuclei. This reduction (dilution) or complete elimination of viruses, fungal and bacteria (99.9%) breaks the cycle of airborne disease transmission and reduces patient anxiety. “It’s like hand sanitizer for your indoor air”. This filtration system removes dust and pollen that cause allergies, kills bacteria and viruses that make people sick, eliminates odors and irritating volatile organic chemicals (VOC) and, re-energizes stale indoor air to facilitate breathing. This system leaves everyone feeling more revitalized.

As surgical professionals, we are compelled to make every effort to reduce the possible transmission of disease and route of infection. At Johnstone Periodontics we have taken necessary precautions in protecting our patients and staff from the transfer of infection by reducing the levels of bio-aerosols within our office.

We continue to research all of the latest information and requirements to ensure the safety of our patients and our team.  Please know that we will do everything we can to assist you with your periodontal needs when we are given the green light to return to practice.   We truly look forward to seeing your smiling faces soon!
